Tesco DIY SOS

valleyskids

Video is the best way of telling a story. Special events have a story behind them and as events by their very nature only last a short period of time, video can be vital in making sure their story is told.

In this case Tesco had raised money across their South Wales stores in aid of the Valleys Kids Penyrenglyn project. In an event that brought together over 100 Tesco employees, Valleys Kids staff and local volunteers they set about re-energising the building that has become a lifeline to the community. This was certainly a story worth telling and we were privileged to be chosen to tell it.

I See Monstas – Cirlces

On-set-I-See-Monstas

When we started Like an Egg Productions we felt very strongly about basing ourselves in the Valleys. We wanted to show the rest of the world that this area can offer a unique and amazing experience to filmmakers. So when we were asked to produce a music video for one of the worlds top production companies who’s previous work this year include Beyonce, Rhianna and Madonna we were very excited to bring them to Pontypridd.

The video for I see Monstas is directed by Josh Cole one of the UK’s biggest directors (Rudimental, Chase and Status). It was filmed in and around Pontypridd, we used local people to star in it and local crew to make this ambitious idea come to life. Filmed over three days with guns, explosions and flying cameras it was a very tough shoot but the results speak for themselves.

The feedback has been fantastic and the final video has been received well. Here’s an interview with Josh where he explains why he loves filming in Wales so much. www.onepointfour.co/2014/09/02/sharp-shooter/

Here’s the video, it gets pretty emotional and contains violence.

Manic Street Preachers – Walk Me to the Bridge

So long my fickle friend, I don’t need this…..

Having produced a Q music award winning video for the Manic Street Preachers last summer, we were delighted to hear that they wanted us to produce the band performance in their latest video for their new track ‘Walk Me to the Bridge’. Having effectively worked with Bafta award winning director Keiran Evans on three previous Manics videos, we were confident we could capture yet another amazing video with him at the helm.

The track is the first single from their upcoming album ‘Futurology’ which was recorded in the famous Hansa Studios in Berlin. The video is also set in the German capital, where a young woman follows cryptic clues around the city, which lead her to the hangar where the band are performing.

The shoot took place at our largest location to date, a mammoth aircraft hangar on the outskirts of St Athan. The sheer vast size of the structure left everyone speechless as they arrived. Each of the doors were the size of a family home and it took some effort to pry them open and shut. Gaffer Mark Holownia and his team did an excellent job with 11th Hour Events and Spartan Audio to spark the empty hangar into life with an impressive lighting and sound set up.

Like and Egg are immensely proud of the work and we’re thankful to each member of the crew who made this such a successful shoot. We’re delighted to showcase the wealth of filmmaking talent that Wales has to offer and we look forward to flexing our filmmaking muscles again in the future. Check out the video below!

Stay – Lewis Watson Music Video

If only I could dream we could start again…….

Like an Egg are proud to reveal our latest production, the music video for the Lewis Watson track ‘Stay’. The single is the first from his debut album ‘The Morning’ which is released in June. Once again we collaborated with director Craig Roberts, following the successful Los Campesinos! video we shot together last Autumn.

This video takes place in a ghoulish cemetery, where the dreams of a lonely girl come true as she falls in love with the dead movie star from her favorite films. It’s a magically surreal yet moving love story.

The shoot took place on an exhausting January evening in the magnificent Cathays Cemetery. Astonishingly the torrential wind and rain subsided, allowing us a brief window of clear weather to film the video. The cemetery was an extraordinary location that art director Carly Wattley transformed into a breathtaking Tim Burtonesque playground. The costume and make-up team of Julie Fox and Sarah-Jane Perez soon filled it with dozens of deceased spirits who lurked in the eerie darkness.

It was a marathon shift for the Like an Egg crew, but we’re overjoyed with the beautiful footage DoP Luke Jacobs managed to capture. We’re immensely pleased with the finished product, which we edited and put together in a couple of demanding days.

Special thanks to the drama students from Coleg Morgannwg, Cathays Cemetery and all who helped make this shoot a success. You can check out some examples of our other music promos by clicking here. Images by Tom Sparey.

Iris Visioncare Promotional Video

Our latest promotional video was made for Iris Visioncare, explaining their newly released Patient Membership Programme. Iris Visioncare needed a video to easily explain what the programme offers to potential future patients and independent optometry practices.

The Like an Egg team travelled down to the picturesque town of Plympton in Devon to film the video for Elm Creative Media. The purpose of the video is to teach the viewer about the programme and it’s benefits, so we included interviews with the people who designed it and put it into practice. These interviews are honest, clear and full of relevant information. Mixing these interviews with interesting shots of optometrists in action creates a video that keeps viewers engaged whilst they learn about the programme.

Iris Visioncare use the video on their website and show it at seminars and meetings with prospective customers. Our promotional videos are an effective way to demonstrate what your business does and how it does it. If you’re interested in having one created for your business please get in touch. War with Heaven – Louis M^ttrs

I’m at war with heaven…. I’m at war on my own….

When the man who directed one of the most spectacular music videos of the last decade asked us to produce his latest music video here in Wales, we really couldn’t say no. Josh Cole, director of Rudimental’s award winning ‘Not Giving in’ music video, had an epic story of redemption to portray in the new video for the upcoming artist Louis M^ttrs. The video was set in London yet we were able to replicate the harsh reality of the capital’s inner city urban life right here in South Wales.

The video was filmed over two busy days in Neath and the Rhondda area. The cast came from London for their first visit to Wales and had an exceptional time. The most challenging aspect was the climatic fight scene that required an elaborate Octocopter shot in the middle of a shopping high street. Thanks to the co-operation of Neath-Port Talbot council we managed to shoot the scene in the early hours of a Sunday morning. The scene was well worth closing the street down for!

It was a pleasure to produce and work with such a small but talented cast and crew, special thanks to make-up artist Amy Riley. Here’s the video, it’s a raw and highly emotive piece that’s certainly not for the faint hearted.

Chase & Status – Alive

Impressed by the War with Heaven video that we produced, Chase & Status asked director Josh Cole to make their next music video. Josh enlisted Chris from Like an Egg as part of his crew that filmed the epic video for the Chase & Status single ‘Alive’. Chris was focus puller and data wrangler, as they braved the freezing temperatures of Montana to shoot on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation.

The video is yet another compelling piece of work by Josh. A dark and moving tale about the spiritual awakening of a drug addict in a Native American community. The painful narrative collides with the breathtaking beauty of Montana to create a beautiful and moving video.

Creithiau Short Film

Creithiau – Original Version (Welsh Language)

“Down. Down into the valley… is a long never ending street that runs from Blaenrhondda to Porth….”

Creithiau is a film we created as part of an S4C/Ffresh short film competition that was looking for films that reflect contemporary Wales.

Being a company that’s proudly based in the heart of the South Wales Valleys, we wanted to portray its history, beauty and unique quirks. We aimed for a raw, emotive and honest reflection of the area we love; not the crass, painful manufactured images screened on recent reality television shows.

Local resident and poet Nicholas McGaughey penned a beautiful poem in Welsh about the Rhondda, citing distinctive oddities that only the native population would relate too. It’s poignant message describes what has been lost, but also the vibrant culture and colourful characters that still remain.

To accompany Nicholas’ moving words we traversed our local area to capture the landscape and landmarks. We shot hours of footage and time-lapses, we’re ecstatic with the results. It was definitely worth holding down our cameras in the rasping wind at six in the morning!

Below is English language version of the film. Enjoy!

ESI Promotional Videos

Our latest promotional videos were made for the environmental specialists ESI. They were looking for a simple yet effective way of showing current clients or potential customers who they were, what they did and how they did it. Why waste time describing these things through pages of text when they could show what they do, quickly and in a visually stimulating package. That’s where our video production expertise comes into practice.

Our team headed to film ESI in action all over the UK, filming in some incredible locations. We wanted to ensure we captured all aspects of the company at work. Varying from planning in the office, analysing and managing data to running a team on site. The images needed to easily explain what the company did but crucially the footage had to maintain the attention of people viewing the video. The high quality images and clear precise interviews educate viewers quickly and effectively.

The videos are perfect for ESI to place on their website or to present to clients in meetings or presentations.  If you’re interested in creating a promotional video for your business or company please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. Here are some other promotional video we’ve created. See more…

Hub Music Festival 2013

Back in August we were given the exciting opportunity to capture the marvelously diverse music scene on offer in Cardiff. Hub Music Festival took place on Womanby Street, in 8 different venues, accommodating over 150 separate acts. The scenes were incredible, the street was awash with bursts of colour and echoes of great live music.

Everyone’s taste in music was catered for in this celebration of independent venues and musicians. Not only was there live music; dancers, free runners and graffiti artists performed on the street in between the numerous venues. The atmosphere was electric and the sights were brilliant. This mini festival created a carnival ambiance in Womanby Street, it was our role to capture it and produce a video advertising next years Hubfest.

It was important to portray the diversity and vast array of different things going on at the festival. Luckily there was no shortage of amazing things happening for us to film. We interviewed the organisers, musicians and attendees of the festival, to give an in depth description of what was going on. Womanby Street was definitely the Hub for culture that weekend and we’re confident that our video reflects this. We look forward to experiencing Hubfest again next year!

Valleys Kids Alcohol Awareness Day

Helping and engaging with our local community is central to the ethos of Like an Egg. We’re keen to make a difference in South Wales so we didn’t hesitate to accept the invitation from the charity Valleys Kids to film their Alcohol Awareness Day.

The event was funded by Comic Relief, it’s purpose was to advise and educate local youngsters about the dangers that alcohol can cause. Valleys Kids ran numerous workshops throughout the day, engaging the youngsters into discussions and physical activities.

The youth theatre group expertly re-enacted different excessive alcohol scenarios, then the audience were asked to comment and discuss what went wrong and how they’d act differently. Local police officers spoke about the dangers of drink driving, bringing an impressive simulator with them for the youngsters to try out.

Our aim was to capture the essence and purpose of the day, demonstrating the importance of workshops like this. We managed this by conducting interviews with the youth workers and the young people themselves, who reflected on what they’d done that day.

It’s great to help our local community and it was refreshing to document some of the tireless work that charities do in supporting our local community.
